When you turn your computer on, it is a function that is fairly straightforward. It will go through several changes until you come to the main window. It is there you are able to click on all of the different programs that you are using including your Internet browser. What Role Do These Programmable Systems Play?

The roles that these programmable systems play has to do with the functionality of software. The software controls what the physical components are able to do from an electronic perspective. All components work on a very simplistic basis of things that are on or off. When they are configured in a certain manner, or activated to perform certain functions, there is a combination of software and hardware working together to create the programs and applications that you use today.

Why Were These Originally Made?

The main reason that these were made had to do with competition. There was initially the discovery of silicon and its ability to conduct electricity, and this led to FPGAs and many other systems. However, it was this need for advancing beyond the competitors that companies had back in the day that led to the small systems that we all now have and operate.

Were They Always The Small?

These were actually never this small before. They were quite large, some of which were housed in buildings. Decades ago there were tubes that were used instead of the very small electronic components that we have today. As technology increased, and with the advent of the transistor, they were allowed to get much smaller. It was in the 1980s when the very first FPGAs were made, and this led to the many different smaller versions of computers and phones that we use. As technology continues to advance, machinery is developed so that human beings are no longer responsible for creating these products. They are also making software that can program everything for you, taking a lot of the human element out of the equation.

What Other Roles To The Play?

These devices are not just used in computers and cell phones. They are also used in virtually every electronic gadget that you use. This is also true of the vehicles that we drive that have the computer systems that are monitoring everything. When you use virtually anything that plugs into a wall, or has a rechargeable battery, this is what allows you to use it as it is programmed to function. From the clicker that you have that turns on your TV, to the stereo system that you operate, all of these will have programmable systems. As mentioned before, due to their size, and due to the complexity of them today, they are typically made and programmed by hardware and software systems that are simply monitored by those that are in charge.

Are They Going To Continue To Get Smaller?

As time progresses, and technology becomes much more advanced, it is likely that they will continue to get thinner and more complex. In some cases, you are looking at a system that will be able to control your house, and even listen to voice commands. In the science fiction movies that we watched decades ago, many of these things are becoming reality. They actually have printers that are able to produce physical items, even food that is edible. Although it may not be possible for these programmable systems to lead to the use of transporters or beyond lightspeed capabilities, there is always the possibility. Technology tends to lead us in directions we would have thought to be unimaginable, yet we are living in the midst of what these programmable systems now allow us to do.
