Ichthyosis is a medical condition that has symptoms of persistent, dry skin. This condition generally develops in infancy or childhood. The condition can develop as a person gets older, or it can be inherited. For most people who suffer with this disease, it is caused by a genetic mutation in their bodies.

When the body is working normally, the body is continuously renewing the surface of the skin. This means that as new skin cells are built, dead skin cells are sloughed off of the body. However, Ichthyosis Treatment brings disruption to this balance and causes one of two problems to develop. Either too many replacement skin cells are produced, or skin cells accumulate on the body, adhere to the body and can look like fish scales.

Although the disease is not contagious, it can cause cosmetic issues for those who suffer with the condition. However, it can interfere with the normal functions of the skin like:

Regulating body temperature
Preventing dehydration
Infection protection

The majority of people who suffer with this disease typically suffer with the mildest form of the disease, ichthyosis vulgaris. Around one in every 250 people are affected with the disease.

What Are The Symptoms?

Depending on the genetic abnormality that caused the disease, different patterns of flaking can occur on the skin. In the majority of cases the skin will flake except in the areas around the joints and on the face.

Skin itching

These symptoms are either noticeable at birth, or they can appear during a person’s childhood. Some of the symptoms include:

Skin itching
Body odor
Buildup of wax in the ears

Symptoms are generally worse during the winter months because of the humidity and warmth. The same can be said for those who live in dry climates.

How To Diagnose

Ichthyosis diagnosis

A doctor can typically diagnose the problem by simply looking at a patient’s skin. Knowing the family history of the patient can also be helpful. However, there are some cases when a skin biopsy must be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Genetic testing can also be helpful.

Duration

This is a disease that will stay with a person for a lifetime. Fortunately, the symptoms can be controlled by working with your doctor to create and follow an effective care plan.

Ichthyosis disease generally manageable. However, if severe skin problems are present, the disease can quickly become life threatening. You also want to call your physician if redness or fever develops on the skin.
